Poetry

Crossroads students often reflect on their Bible studies and their circumstances through poetry. They share raw, honest emotions as they write about frustrations, heartbreaks, gratitude, regrets, hopes, and dreams.

Poetry

“God’s Word” by Bal T., MA

A blinking red light on a high tower;
A high beam beacon on the lighthouse;
A traffic light at railroad crossing:
All have a single purpose—
To give signal in order to avoid accidents!
Likewise, Your Word my God
Illuminates my path,
Leads me through it.

Poetry

“I was Lost” by Sarah, Australia

I was lost, so very lost
I couldn’t see just how much it cost
I didn’t care or love myself
But now I know I need a little help
God truly loves me
Now that I see
And He forgives me
Let me be truly free
Thank you, God, for accepting me

Poetry

“A Prisoner” by Michael B., MO

I sit in this cell every day,
Wishing someone would come my way.
I wonder why no one cares for my soul,
Why no one will visit me in this dark hole.
Someone out there has just what I need,
And could plant within me the Gospel seed.
So here I sit, alone and lost,
Will no one out there bear the cost?
My soul is ripe, my heart is heavy,
For Jesus Christ, my soul is ready.
Will you come and meet this need,
And plant in me the Gospel seed?
Who will do this onerous task,
And go to where the Savior asks?
To the prisons and jails where the broken are,
And bring to us the Savior’s heart?

Poetry

“No Time to Play” by George W., CA

Dedicated to my son, Andrew

My precious boy with golden hair,
Came up one day beside my chair,
And fell upon his bended knee,
And said, “O daddy, please play with me!”
I said, “Not now, go on and play;
I’ve got so much to do today.”
He smiled through tears in eyes so blue,
When I said, “We’ll play when I get through.”
But the chores lasted all through the day,
And I never did find time to play.
When supper was over, and dishes done,
I was much too tired for my little son.
I tucked him in and kissed his cheek,
And watched my angel fall asleep.
As I tossed and turned upon my bed,
Those words kept ringing in my head.
“Not now, son, go on and play;
I’ve got so much to do today.”
I fell asleep, and in a minute’s span,
My little boy is a full-grown man.
No toys are there to clutter the floor,
No dirty fingerprints on the door.
No snacks to fix, no tears to dry.
The room just echoes my lonely sigh.
And now I’ve got time to play,
But my precious boy is gone away.
I awoke myself with a pitiful scream,
And realized it was just a dream.
For across the room in his little bed,
Lay my curly-haired boy, the sleepyhead.
My work will wait ’til another day,
For now I must find some time to play.

Poetry

“Find Rest in the Tests” by Adam H., Guam

In tests of calamity,
Rests the perfection in faith,
As God sees us endure, to be sure,
We can move with a grace

As we face even the vilest of evils.
In His loving embrace,
Through the ultimate gift of the Son,
Who suffered it all,
For our fall to sin

We begin
To see the way, truth, and life
In a world full of strife.
God knows our imperfection, in reflection of love
Through Jesus.
Redemption in the Son has begun,
Sinless, victorious in every way.
We wait for the day to praise hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah! As God was with us
Every step of the way!

Poetry

“Brotherly Kindness” by Earl C., MO

Ask, what do you know?
Like God’s love, it makes us grow:
When you’re feeling sad and blue,
The simplest kindnesses help us through.
Love, joy, peace: these three you receive,
Life’s dearest treasures are the seed;
Walking alone, you stumble and fall,
Having another, a brother, keeps you tall.

“God’s Champion” by Michael B., MO

The Philistines had a giant, a mountain of a man,
His towering height six cubits and a span.
He defied the armies of God that day,
“Who’ll come and face me?” They heard him say.
None there could face him, they all just knew,
But God had provided him a champion true.
He was but a youth, and his face was ruddy,
But he was ready for the battle, no matter how bloody.
“Take my armor,” said Saul, “Go to battle with it.”
But the champion looked and knew it wouldn’t fit.
“I have no need of these,” said he,
“For the God of Israel fights with me.”
With his sling and five stones, the giant he faced,
While in front of their foes, the Israelites lost face.
He trusted in God for his aim to be true,
And that day, for God’s glory, Goliath David slew.
Ev’ry good story has a moral, they say,
I believe this one is “Trust God today.”
If God made sure David’s aim was true,
Imagine what He could do with you.
With a sling and a stone, a giant he slew
What God did with David, He can do with you.

Poetry

“The Way” by Colby D., GA

Out of mind
Out of sight
No more terrors
In the night
Jesus opened my eyes
And it was day
Thank you God
For showing me
The way

Poetry

“Free and Forgiven” by Zachary L., VA

Trapped in a building,
trapped in my mind,
With my eyes wide open,
but yet I still feel blind.

Trapped by confusion,
trapped somewhere in between
Of being spotless on the surface,
but my soul is unclean.

Trapped by my words,
trapped in my own scheme,
And I dream of being free,
but my dream is still a dream.

Trapped in my Bible,
hanging on tightly to every word,
God said there is freedom
in surrender,
so the reality to my dream
is what I heard.

Freed by confession,
I’ve been set free by God’s love,
A free gift of salvation
God sent us from above.

Free and forgiven, all thanks to
my Savior Jesus Christ,
Who has made my dreams come
true; my freedom sure feels nice.

Poetry

A poem by Ezra W., CA

I’ve seen mist settle in a mountain valley
And amazing grace in a broken alley
I’ve seen new life in the birth of my son,
I’ve walked in ancient redwood forests
And in their silence heard a glorious song
God wrote a righteous story
From a life I lived so wrong
Countless times I’ve seen God’s glory
And I’ll humbly sing His song.
