Poetry

Crossroads students often reflect on their Bible studies and their circumstances through poetry. They share raw, honest emotions as they write about frustrations, heartbreaks, gratitude, regrets, hopes, and dreams.

Poetry

“Field Work” by Benny L., CA

The freshness and cold air of the morning,

The smell of damp dirt

The sounds of tractors,

Tree branches rustling.

The cling and clangs of ladders

People talking, people singing.

The smell of fresh peaches.

Lunchtime

Under a tree

Summertime

Everyday routine

Poetry

“Who Did That?” by William J., WV

Who put Him on that cross?
Roman nails held Him high
Who put Him on that cross?
The Jews yelled crucify
Who put Him on that cross?
So easy to place blame
Who put Him on that cross?
Disciples ran away
Who put Him on that cross?
We put Him on that tree
Who put Him on that cross?
The scoundrels include me
Blaming Jews and Romans
Tells not the true story
His cross was His weapon
To claim His victory

Poetry

“Finally Free” by Matthew R., TX

Sitting in my prison clothes
Staring at the fence and wire
Feeling like I’ve reached the end;
Lord, Heaven couldn’t feel much higher.
But as I look up, searching for You,
The picture’s now suddenly clear—
I am freer than I’ve ever been
And in this valley I need not fear.
I’m free from the same I lived,
Free from the chains on me.
I’m free from the prison of sin,
Free from who I used to be.
Finally free! Yeah, I’m finally free.
Oh Lord, I’m finally free.
Even though I face this time,
Even though I’ve lost these years,
Even though my heart is hurting,
I will not hide behind my tears.
My life is no longer my own
SO I will run on in this race—
Thankful for my brand new start,
The results of His amazing grace.
I’m confined to this prison cell
A story on my heart to tell.
The chains have fallen off my soul
His love filled me and made me whole.
I’m free from the shame I lived,
Free from the chains on me.
I’m free from the prison of sin,
Free from who I used to be.
Finally free! Yeah, I’m finally free.
Oh Lord, I’m finally free.
Because He loved me, I’m finally free.

Poetry

“The Eyes of God” by Matthew C., TX

The eyes of God are everywhere,

We can’t escape His tender care.

No matter what we try to hide,

He’s always right there by our side.

There is no sin He does not see,

There is nowhere that we can flee.

We may deceive the eyes of men,

But we can never deceive Him.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

We all have turned to our own way.

But yet, our God, in His great love,

Sent us His Son from high above.

Into this weak and sad estate,

Come, O Lord, don’t hesitate!

Please search and know my heart, I pray,

And guide me in Your truth this day.

Poetry

A poem by William K., ID

Beautiful and peaceful
God’s perfect world
Lovely and joyful
’Til into sin we were hurled

Battered and broken
Tattered and torn
From one lie spoken
Our sin was born

Lost in our sin
Full of pain and sorrow
In a downward spiral
With no hope for tomorrow

Unto a broken world
Our Savior was born
Tattered and broken
Battered and torn

Our salvation was born
No longer tattered or broken, battered or torn

Poetry

“In Troubled Days” by Dean T., GA

In days all filled with troubles
And feelings of despair,
When life is all in chaos,
Remember, He’ll be there

To grant us peace and comfort
And solace to our grief,
If only we stand steadfast
And hold to our belief

For in these days of trouble
And forlorn paths we trod,
We only need to trust in
The holy Son of God

Poetry

“Words” by Sherri T., MO

Cold walls, locked doors
Crimes committed
Tears, hateful words
So much loneliness
Drugs, addictions

Children without their mothers
Absent fathers
No money, rent due
People lie, some die
No life, desperation

Dreams gone
Urgency, feeling lost
Sad, worlds apart
Hungry, thirsty
Nowhere to turn

All of my life
I thought I knew the way
I obviously was wrong
Down and out
Bitter and alone

Please, God—
I can’t make it
Through this life
On my own

Poetry

“O Christ, My Love” by Dustin R., WY

O Christ, my love, who died for me,
what more could my soul desire?

Your Spirit came, renewed my strength,
and now my heart is on fire

Oh Christ, my love, author and perfecter of faith
You took my sin upon the cross, scorning all sin’s shame

O Christ, my love, I fix my eyes upon Your glory
Love is a great expression of what You’ve done for me

O Christ, my love, the planted seed
Roots in kindness and fruits in deeds

O Christ, my love, redeeming force
You are the way, my charted course

O Christ, my love, faithful and true
You are my Shepherd, and I cling to You

O Christ, my love, I will obey
All You command and all You say

O Christ, my love, I belong to You
I await the day for the Kingdom anew

O Christ, my love, my forever home
Eternity will be your never-ending song

O Christ, my love, Son of man
I praise our Father, the great “I AM”

O Christ, my love, my King on the throne above
The light of life, God’s chosen Son

O Christ, my love, almighty God
The glory is Yours, my love, my love

O Christ, my love, my dearest friend
You are my hope and joy, amen and amen

Poetry

“The Starry Sky” by Dominick R., TX

I look up at the starry sky

And wonder, o, I wonder why

You would care for me, o lonely me,

In all Your glorious majesty.

I look upon the earth, so small,

And wonder how You, the All in All,

Could care for me, o lonely me,

In all Your glorious majesty.

I look upon my frame, so frail

And wonder what Your love entails.

At last I see the things You have for me

In all Your glorious majesty.

I look up at the starry sky

And wonder, o, I wonder why

I never saw this love before

But now I see it more and more.

Poetry

“The Jesus Prayer” by Ronald M., SC

Lord, what a sinful world in which we live.

Jesus came to shed His blood
and forgiveness give.

Son and daughter fight against mom and dad.

Of course society has traded good for bad.

God, can You really redeem this world of sin?

Have You really made a way for all to be
as it should have been?

Mercy is the only thing that can save us all.

On that you can count since Adam’s fall.

Me, I depend on Christ’s pure blood,

A final sacrifice to save us from sin’s evil flood.

Sinner, it’s not too late to turn and say:

“Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me,
a sinner” today!
